Cake On Fire

I didn't realize it had been over a week since I had entered a blog post.  I guess summer is in full swing at our house, and all the activities have cut into my stamping time.  That's ok, though, I wouldn't want it any other way!

My husband's step-grandmother is turning 90 in a few days, and I wanted to make a funny 'old' card for her.  I have made a couple of these in the past, and they are really fun for those 'landmark' birthdays.  I got my idea from jpardoe's card on SCS seen here.

I changed mine up a bit by making my cake out of punches and white applique, since I don't have a really good cake stamp that doesn't scream wedding!

You can use your punch to make any size shape with rounded ends.  Cut a strip of paper as wide as your punch minus just a hair so it will fit into the back side of the punch like this.

Once the paper is in the slot, punch it out, and you will have one rounded end.  If you want both ends rounded, stick the other end in in the same manner, making the shape as large or small as you want, and punch again.  If your shape is going to be on the small side, you can always use temporary adhesive to attach a strip of scrap paper to your cardstock layer so it is easier to handle getting it into the punch.  I didn't have to do that for this size cake.

Here is a close up of the charred card.  I sponged more mustard and chocolate chip before and after distressing the corners.  It really looks like burned paper.

A few tips if you 'char' your edges.  Make sure the ink is dry before you do any more distressing, or just make sure you don't touch your card with your inky fingers.  Lots of smudges can happen during this step.

This is the back of my card.  Oops!  All the smudges are from microscopic (yes, I need reading glasses) pieces of sponge that came off during my frantic sponge distressing.  I didn't notice them on my work space, and the effects can be seen all over the back of my card.  Hopefully her 90 year old eyes aren't much better than mine and she won't notice it.  So make sure your work space is clean after you 'char' your card!

Post Without a Title

I couldn't think of a clever title for this post, so it will be title-less, if that is even a word.  I'm too tired to figure it out right now, so it is what it is.  heehee!

I have wanted to stamp almost every day for the last week, but nothing spoke to me.  I decided I was going to stamp something tonight even if it wasn't post worthy.  Just to get myself back in the groove.  Summer is always a difficult time for me to keep up with stamping every day.  We are so busy with activities during the day that I usually want to just sit and do nothing after the kids are tucked in for the night.  All the bickering and whining takes its toll on my poor feeble brain.

My card turned out to be worthy of a blog post (I think), and here it is...

The squares were punched from some of the Twinkling H20s papers I had previously made, and I just happened to have dragonfly brads in similar colors.  This card was not planned in any way.  It just came together.  Don't you just love it when that happens?!

Do you ever have to force yourself to be creative?  Or is your mojo always in high gear?  Sometimes I think I have so many options between all my stamps, color choices, embellishments, and all the 'stuff', that I become overwhelmed and can't be creative.  I tend to make a lot of 'challenge' cards, but even then sometimes I hit a wall.  Then this card happened.  I still don't know where it came from, but I'm glad I forced myself to stamp tonight; I think it turned out pretty good.

Mmmm, Chocolate OLW

It's Wednesday, and that means it's time for Susan's One Layer Wednesday challenge.  This week, the challenge is to overlap an image and a sentiment.   I had several ideas come to mind, but this is the one I ended up completing.

The sentiment says "Man cannot live on chocolate alone, but woman sure can. - author unknown".  Now isn't that the truth!

I have not been able to find a chocolate kiss stamp that I like, so I made my own.  I traced around a real Hershey's kiss, then cut the shape out of a piece of scrap rubber.  At least I'm using some of the rubber I've been hoarding since I first started buying SU! stamps over 14 years ago!!   heehee!

Once again I used my SAMJ for placement of the sentiment and image.  I off-stamped the kiss one time so it wasn't so dark.

Penned Border

Here is another great idea I got from reading Susan's Simplicity blog.  (I'm sure it was on her blog, but I couldn't find the post to link it here.  :{  I penned frames around my daisy cards a couple weeks ago, but this is a little different in that it is a border frame.  I made a template out of a piece of GKD 120# cardstock with 1/2" borders, then penned away.

The inside says "your ears are hairier than you head".  A perfect card for an 'older' gentleman!

Penning a border is a great way to tie an image and a sentiment together as you can see on this card.  It is a great technique for a one layer card.

Here is another penned border card I made for my husband for his birthday.

Very simple, but gets the point across nicely.  This is a great look for masculine cards.  No frills or embellishments needed.

If you look closely, you can see why it is of utmost importance that you let your ink dry completely before erasing the pencil guideline.  In my haste, I smeared birthday when I erased too soon.  I thought Memento dried fast, but apparently not that fast!  From now on, I will give it a blast with my heat gun if I'm in a hurry.

OLW5 Faux Ribbon

I have been going straight to bed after the kids are tucked in most of the week trying to get some much needed rest.  My nasty cold is finally going away, and I got some time to stamp this morning.

I love Susan's One Layer Wednesday challenges, and have had this idea brewing since I saw this week's challenge.  I'm glad I woke up at 5:00 so I could finally get it on paper!

This also fits the CC271 from SCS this week - Dusty Razzleberry Saffrons.  Betty is right, these colors look great together!

At first, I didn't think I had any faux embellishment stamps, and I was going to make a button out of a solid circle stamp. But then I came across this ribbon stamp by Hero Arts, and I knew just what I wanted to do with it.

This card would not have been possible without the use of a Stamp-a-ma-jig.  The ribbon had to be stamped 3 times to cover the full length (width?) of the card.  Since the stamp starts and ends with two dots, I used a white gel pen to add the center dot to make it look like one long piece of ribbon.

I really like how this turned out, and I never would have thought of it had it not been for Susan's challenge.  Thanks, Susan, for making me think outside the box!

It Doesn't Pay to Go to Bed Early

I have been fighting a nasty cold for well over a week, and have been burning my candle at both ends as usual.  I was so exhausted after I got the kids to bed last night, I went to bed, too.  I was in bed before 9:00.  That never happens.  Ever.

I was hoping to get a good 8-10 hours of sleep.  My body could definitely use it.  So I was a little peeved when I woke up at 2:00am, ready to go for the day.  After all, I had gotten my usual 5 hours of sleep.  Who needs more than that?  Apparently not me.

As I tried to go back to sleep, I heard a faint cry coming from my craft room.  I tried to ignore it, but it wouldn't stop.  It was saying something about an unfinished project waiting for me.  Tossing and turning wouldn't get my card finished, so I got up and came to my cave.

Here is what I finished.

I know this looks familiar, because I cased myself.  I got so many nice comments on my other butterfly card, I decided to change it up a bit with this one.

I used the Twinkling H2Os technique that Susan (LateBlossom) posted on her blog.  If you haven't tried this yet, I highly encourage you to try it.  It is so easy, and you can use it for so many things.  I used cold press watercolor paper, so there was a lot of texture before I ran it through the Cuttlebug.

The CB pretty much flattenend the texture, but you can still see a little variation in the color.  To add some distressing, I lightly sanded the embossed area.  I love SU! paper, and use their colors exclusively, but if you want to have a white core show through when distressing, this is a great technique to use.

Black and White with a Splash of Color

Here are some cards I made tonight that are primarily black and white. I added just a touch of color, and next to the B&W, it really makes the color pop. I love how black can have that effect.

I got this stamp in a huge lot of stamps I bought on ebay just for one other stamp in the box.  There were a lot of great stamps in there, and I think this one is a classic.  I'm not sure this needs a sentiment, but if I add one, it will be on the right side under the ribbon.  After I uploaded this picture, I decided the cherries needed something, so I embossed them using a Versamark pen and clear EP.  It looks a lot better.

I can't get my printer to print on the 120# cardstock I always use for my base, so I had to hand write the sentiment.  No matter how much I practice, when it comes to writing on the card, I always mess up!  Guess that's why they call it hand made!

I made my own shadow stamp by punching out a piece of excess rubber with the oval punch.  I almost had to make another one tonight because I couldn't find this one that I had made long ago.  Now it has it's own home!

Stampin', Stampin', Stampin'!

Yea! I finally got some time to stamp! There were some really good challenges out there this week, so I had a lot of motivation. Now that my ink pad holder is finished, I deserved some time to play.

This is for Susan's (LateBlossom) OLW blog challenge to use ribbon on a one layer card with no other embellishments if you can help it. It was difficult for me, but I was able to get by without using anything else but the ribbon.

I added some highlights to the flower with my Sakura white gel pen.  SU!'s vanilla ribbon is a pretty good match for so saffron ink.

For my next card, I combined three challenges from SCS; CAS66 was an inspiration challenge based on a sketch by Kelly (kmahany), CC270 Mambo suede with a wood grain dessert option, and WT270 edge distressing.  Isn't this little stinker cute?

Not only does the image have wood grain, but I made my own by dragging the soft suede ink pad down a strip of suede cardstock.  The image was watercolored with an aquapainter and reinkers.

This was for a challenge to myself to use any new toys before they gather dust!  I finally received my butterfly embosslits die after it was on backorder, and tried it out tonight.  I love it!!!  I ran the butterfly through my Cuttlebug first, then stamped it with the butterfly accent stamp inked in riding hood red.  It gives the butterfly a lot more dimension with the embossing.  Add a few half pearls and some ribbon, and you have a 10 minute card!

Guy Card and some Simple Daisies

My brother's birthday is tomorrow, and like usual, it snuck up on me, and I didn't have a card made for him.  I was going to make it last night, but nothing came to me until I was lying in bed trying to go to sleep.  It was already almost time to get up, so I thought I'd better stay in bed and wait 'til morning to make it.

I used the new Espresso cardstock that SU is adding to their core colors this year.  It is so rich in color, I already know it will be my go-to brown.  I didn't think I would like anything better than chocolate chip (how could I like anything better than chocolate?), but we're talking about coffee here!

Isn't this a great color combo for a guy card?  I will have to file this one away for future reference.  You could substitue navy, artichoke, riding hood red, eggplant, wasabi, Baja breeze, or Pacific point for the embossed panel, and it would still be a great combo.  Don't you just love the espresso and suede together?

Then I was playing around with my Both Way Blossoms set that I have had for at least 3 years.  I only know that because it retired in 2007.  Can you believe it had never seen ink?  I have too many sets in that situation, so I am trying to use them so I can decide if I want to keep them.  After all, I have to make room for the new sets I don't have yet!  heehee!

It may be a little hard to see, but the center card has a frame around the image made with my scor-pal.  I was just playing around with different frames to make a one layer card.  I made one image panel and colored in the leaves, but decided to leave these black and white with just a pop of color from the flock.  As I am cleaning out and reorganizing my craft stash, I am finding all kinds of fun things to use.

These don't have sentiments stamped on them yet.  Too many times I have a card I want to send to someone, but it has the wrong words, so I thought I'd wait to put them on until I know who I am sending them to.

A Purging Find

I was prompted to purge my craft supplies after I read a post on SCS.  That will be a different post, but today, I wanted to show you what I made with one of my discoveries.  Shoved way in the back of one of my drawers was a pack of 6 flower brads I had bought at Target's dollar spot many moons ago.  As I looked at it, a card idea popped into my head, and this is what I made...

I stamped again!

It has been a long time since I have stamped anything.  I have had lots of ideas, but just can't make any of them into a card.  It seems I always get 'stuck' on something and can't put it all together.

I really liked the color challenge this week on SCS - CC264 bermuda grey saffrons, so that is where I started.  I also wanted to try the dessert option to make a smooshed flower.  I had no idea how to make one, but played around until I got a half-way decent looking flower.  It was really fun to make, and adds a lot of dimension to the card.

To make a smooshed flower, punch several layers of any flower shape out of cardstock or patterned paper.  I stamped a background stamp on this one in saffron ink to give it a little texture.  Then just smoosh it up!  I curled the edges, rolled it into a ball, and just played with it until the paper was pliable enough to shape it a little bit.  You may want to take it a little easier with patterned paper since it isn't as heavy as cardstock and it may tear.  But that would be ok, too.  It would just be more distressed.  Sponging the edges after you smoosh it up gives it a nice distressed look.  Starting from the bottom up, I used my Tombow mono-multi to adhere the layers together just in the center of the flowers.  I did one layer at a time and gathered the center a little on each flower and let it dry before adding the next flower.  Gathering it brings the edges in little, making the 'petals' slightly smaller.  Use as many layers as you want, then just pop a button or brad in the center, and you have a beautiful smooshed flower!

Guest Designer Week

This is my week to be a guest designer for the CAS57 challenge.  This week, our challenge is to layer 2 different shapes while keeping it clean and simple.  I struggled with many different ideas, and in the end, they all came together for me.

Here is the card I submitted as a designer.

This was the first idea I came up with - an oval on a circle.  When I first put the shapes together it looked like an eyeball, or the CBS logo, and that weirded me out.  Then I saw a beach ball and knew that is what I could make.  Then I had to figure out how to get it into a card design.  A day or two later, this is how it came together.

I love this cute little image from A Muse, and decided to use stars in my design.  I didn't have a star big enough to go around the circle, so I enlarged one of the punched out stars by hand and cut it out.

CASE-ing Myself

Remember when I said my embossed buttons with the gingham ribbon would make a cute baby card?  This is what I had in mind.

The CAS56 challenge this week was to make a square card.  This one is 4 1/4" square.  I normally don't make square cards, but this was fun.

Login/Password Altered Composition Book

This has been on my "To Do" list for quite some time.  I have a little piece of paper that I use for all my login and password information, and it is such a mess.  I am running out of room, and it is no longer alphabetized, so I wanted to have something that was a little more organized.  This altered mini composition book was the perfect solution!

I began by cutting my DSP the same height as the book, and a little bit longer just to make sure I had enough to wrap around the binding.  I scored it in two places to go around the binding edge, then when I was happy with a snug fit, I adhered the DSP to the cover with tacky tape around all the edges.  I made sure to put the tape all the way to the edges of the book so the paper can't pull away.  Then I adhered the ribbon with more tacky tape and centered the decorative panel.

In order to organize all my information, I stamped the alphabet letters on the corner of each page.  Now I'll be able to find what I am looking for quickly.

New Challenge Category - F4A1

Here is a card I made for a new challenge category at SCS.  The coordinators decided that the Limited Supplies Challenge had run its course and it was time for something fresh and fun.  They came up with the Free for All challenge, a kind of anything goes challenge.  It sounds like it will be a lot of fun.

This week the challenge was to use textures, colors, and patterns.

My texture came from the dry embossing, ribbon, button treatment, and even the image itself.  We were to use a color we don't normally use, and that would be yellow for me.  I didn't include any patterned paper, but there is a pattern on the ribbon!

I think this layout with the buttons and gingham ribbon would make a great baby card with a different image.

I'm a CAS Guest Designer!

Things have been busy over at Splitcoast with the CAS Spring DT search.  It was really fun this time as Jen chose an Olympic theme for all the challenges.  I didn't even make the first cut, but then Jen asked me to be a guest designer during the month of March.  I was so honored!  How could I say no?

I usually don't use black for my base layer, but I really think it makes the card on this one.  Talk about pop!  I love this card!

Both butterflies are stamped with apricot ink; the small one on white cardstock, the larger one on apricot cardstock.  Then I stamped the flowered butterfly with white craft ink and embossed with white detail EP.  The dots on the small butterfly were inked with a Versamark pen and also embossed with white detail EP.  Both butterflies were cut out by hand.  The swirl and sentiment were both stamped with white craft ink and embossed with white detail EP.

I won't write "embossed with white detail EP" again...I promise!

Never More Than...

I made this card for the LSC260 challenge at Splitcoast this week.  We were challenged to use a border punch and ribbon on our card.  I noticed this layout on a card while I was at the store today, and made a point to remember it since it is perfect for my CAS style.  It is also a great way to use up some of the pretty paper I have been hoarding.  I will be making more of these in different colors!

The pretty paper on here was a RAK from my friend, Lisa.  Isn't it pretty?  Thanks, Lisa!  I made the rose red panel by tracing around the outside edge of the same die I used to cut the sentiment panel, and cut it out by hand.

Happy Spring card

I really wanted to make a second card for the CAS54 challenge - Wishing for Spring.  Probably because I can't wait for Spring to arrive, and I want to be surrounded by the sights of Spring!  Like many of my stamps, I have had this one for a long time, and it has never seen ink.  Lately, I have been making more of an effort to use some of my neglected stamps.  Something about feeling guilty...

I am kicking myself right now because I had the perfect sentiment out and ready to use, then I forgot all about it.  It says "have a sunshiney day", and I like that so much better than "happy spring".  I may just have to make another card!

This image is watercolored, then cut out with a Nestabilities label die.  After embossing, I left the paper in the die to sponge the sky and grass, leaving a white border.  I tied a piece of thread around the ribbon to gather it a little bit under the button.

Twisted Humor

I had been looking for a realistic chocolate bunny stamp for a long time, so I was very happy when I saw this Chocolate Bunny stamp in the current Occasions catalog by Stampin' Up! It was just what I was looking for.  Then it sat on my desk for a couple weeks patiently waiting to be inked.  I've known for a long time what I was going to do with it...that's why I was looking for it in the first place.   Well, it finally met it's ink, then it sat there for a few more days waiting to be made into a card.

Then Miss Boo announced the CAS54 challenge for this week - Wishing for Spring.  Spring makes me think of Easter, which makes me think of chocolate bunnies, which makes me think of biting their ears off!  Doesn't everyone start with the ears?  (Did you know there was a reason why everyone starts with the ears?  The way the bunnies are made and rotated when they are cooled, there is more chocolate at the tips of the ears than any other part of the bunny.  I'm not making this up - I saw it on "How It's Made".  I love that show!)

Anyhoo...It was time to make my twisted humor bunny card!  My bunny was thrilled to finally be made into something useful.  His friend didn't fare so well...

Don't they look like real chocolate bunnies?  They just need those yellow and blue eyes!  The second bunny was made using the mirror image stamp.  I used Versamark ink and clear EP.  The grass was sponged around the edges before I cut the blades into it.  I tore a sticky-note to use as a template for the clouds, and sponged them with Bashful Blue ink.  The eggs were colored with SU markers and cut out.  I used 1/4" and 1/8" punches for the thought circles and outlined them with black Sharpie.  The sentiment ovals were cut out with Nestabilities and popped up on dimensionals.  I used the 1/8" punch to take the bite out of the poor little bunny's ear.

New old challenge cards

Jen, MissBoo on SCS, just announced a new search for CAS Design Team members.  We had to make and submit a card using a past CAS challenge, so these are what I made.

This was for CAS24, a color challenge to use turquoise, orange, and yellow.  I've had this Michael's $ stamp for a long time, and this was the perfect occasion to use it.  The ribbon was in my scrap jar, and I think it compliments the trees nicely.  Aren't these colors pretty together?

This was for the CAS45 challenge - "I've Got Curves".  The Cuttlebug layer was a leftover from a previous attempt at a card.  I used my Fiskars cloud scissors to make the waves, and paper pieced the whale.
